Senate rejects the Amendments to the Mass Media Law

In a meeting on Tuesday Senate rejected the amendment of mass Media law which were approved by the House of Representative,.

Based on amendments approved by the House of Representatives, A commission named “ Media Commission to address Violations” should be created and headed by the minister of Information and Culture.

Two months ago, the House of representatives has approved the amendments of tree articles in the Mass Media law that was proposed by the Ministry of Information and Culture. This action of House of representatives raised the intensive reaction of advocacy institutions of Journalists and Media activists.

During  the last two weeks, The journalists representatives has regularly contacted presidents of different commissions in Senate and requested the rejection of amendments in Mass Media Law by the Senate.

After the rejection of amendments in Mass Media Law a commission will be created by National Council to resolve the Issue. And If this commission accepted the amendment of articles in mass Media Law then it will be sent to the President of Afghanistan to be signed otherwise no changes will be made in it.

Afghanistan National Journalists Federation which is consist of 9 advocacy institutions of Journalists continuously struggles so that the both Houses of  parlement completely reject the amendments of Mass Media Law.

Faheem Dashty, Chief Executive Director of ANJU and a member of Journalists Federation Leadership says:  “ Certainly, after creating a commission to address Media violation by the ministry of Information and Culture would pave the ground for the conservative circles in the Government to legally restrict the freedom of Media and Expression.”

He included: “ We request the National Council to not allow it, the freedom of speech was the grates achievement over the past 12 years while will be damaged by the actions of peoples like the Minister of Information and Culture.
