According to the police officials of Baghlan province, one of the attackers on reporters is detained today morning.
Armed people, related to ex-mayor of Pulkhumri city had beaten up two reporters of Tanweer local TV channel last Sunday.
However, Tanweer TV channel officials claimed that the detainee has been released after a couple of hours of imprisonment based on a bail. The editor-in-chief of Tanweer TV channel, Sher Mohammad Jahesh said: “The detainee’s name is Hameed who is cousin of ex-mayor of Pulkhumri, and one of the attackers who seriously beaten up our reporters early this week.”
He Added: “police only detained one of those who attacked our reporters, but they couldn’t keep him longer in detention, and finally released him based on a bail.”
Wednesday this week Afghanistan's National Journalists Union had requested Interior Affairs and Information and Culture Ministries as well as National Security Directorate in an official letter to detain the attackers in Baghlan province.
In the letter there was also a complaint about the pressures from Baghlan Police and Attorney Office on Tanweer TV channel staffs.
While it’s said that family members and relatives of ex-mayor are using their influence in the provincial judicial system in order to accuse Tanweer TV channel staffs, dozens of members of Baghlan Provincial Council members, representatives of civil society and journalists announced their support for Tanweer TV channel employees in a meeting today.
At the end of the meeting some of the participants including members of Provincial Council went to Baghlan police office and asked them to refer the case to the Provincial Council in order to be solved.
In the presence of representatives of civil society and journalists, Baghlan Provincial Council is going to hold its first meeting in the next Saturday to solve the problem.
