Thursday May 10, 2018

A while ago, a local media in Badghis province registered a complaint in the provincial office of Afghanistan’s National Journalists Union (ANJU) about the lack of access to information in the local government agencies in this province.

The local office of ANJU in Badghis province organized a meeting to address this problem with deputy governor of that province and the head of the Joint Committee of Media and the Government.

In this meeting, journalists complained about the lack of coordination by local government agencies in that province in regards to access to information and meanwhile asked the Joint Committee of Media and the Government to resolve this problem.

Faiz Muhammad Mirzad the deputy governor of Badghis province and the head of Joint Committee in that province, promised to require the officials of government agencies in that province to cooperate sufficiently with media in their upcoming meeting. He added that strengthening the freedom of speech and providing access to information for journalists is among essential duties of government agencies and they should not prevent the access of information to journalists.

In the meantime, Mr. Nabiullah Binesh the provincial representative of ANJU in Badghis described this situation as alarming and demanded the urgent scrutiny of the matter by the office of the Governor and the head of the Joint Committee.

The limitations of access to press units in the Capital and the lack of press units and public relations in the local government agencies for precise news coverage is said to be one of the major challenges in the face of local journalists in this province.
