A while ago, Mr. Mirullah Basharat a former cameraman for Omid Radio & TV was beaten by Crime Department of Takhar Police near his office.
Hence, journalists’ support unions condemned this obscene act against a media worker and demanded the prosecution of this case by government agencies.
In order to implement this decision, efforts were made to address this issue through official channels of local government in Takhar. However, no clear response were given in this respect by these officials. Therefore journalists in this province decided to go with boycotting the news related to the Governor of Takhar, organize public demonstrations and protest camps against Police Department of Takhar.
After frequent meetings the officials of Crime department of Takhar police apologized to Mr. Mirullah Basharat. Mr. Shafiqullah Poya, the representative of Afghanistan’s National Journalists Union (ANJU) in Takhar province states: “the officials of the Crime Department of Takhar Police condemned their actions against Mr. Basharat as acts against human, moral, and legal values and apologized to him.”
Meanwhile the representative office of ANJU had asked the local government to establish a joint committee of journalists and government officials to address this case. As a result of efforts made by this committee, this case was prosecuted and it was resolved through arbitrations and consent of both sides.
