Threats against Zafar Bamyani's life; Voice of America journalist

The voice of America radio Journalist Mr. Zafar Bamyani has abandoned his job in Bamyan becuase of threats against his life.

According to Bamyani threats against him gained momentum when a report about, Hakim Shujayee, a local strongmen in Uruzgan province released.

Bamyani says his report has been distorted by Mr. Akmal Davy, one of the officials of Voice of America Radio in Washington.

Bamyani is living in Kabul now. He says that he is trying to prove that the report he prepared had no flaw or defect in terms of professionalism. If there are some charges against Hakim Shujayee, they are bacause of the distortion in my report.

Bamyani has asked journalist organizations to help him in order to prove his legitimacy.

Fahim Dashty, chief executive of Afghanistan National Journalists’ Union (ANJU) said: "Mr. Bamyani has provided the ANJU with the evidences and the documents which show that his report is completely based on professional standards.”

According to Dashty, the ANJU is trying to find a solution to Bamyani’s problem, especially in collaboration with other national and international journalist organizations and advocates of free speech and a free press.
