Statement No 10

Sunday November 25, 2012

Afghanistan’s National Journalists Union declaration on the occasion of Universal Day of compaign against immunity of violence on journalists.

22nd of November (2nd of Qaws) has been named the day of campaign against immunity of violence on journalists.

The Journalists, media activists and journalism institutions around the world celebrate this day and criticize the governments which do not pursue the cases of the journalists faced with violence.

Afghan Government is one of them. During the eleven years, since the collapse of the Taliban regime hundreds of cases of violence against journalists and media activists have been received by the Afghan government, but even one of them is not completely pursuit and no one has been captured regarding those cases.

During this time almost twenty Afghan journalists have lost their lives; some of them killed during preparing reports while some others targeted by plan.

Although the defending organizations of freedom of expression and especially the Afghanistan’s National Journalists Union have repeatedly asked the government to seriously follow those cases, capture the criminals and let the law to rule, but the officials seem to be deaf and there is no response.

The Afghanistan National Journalists Union while considering the security and immunity of the journalists and other citizens a main and major responsibility of the government, once again asks the responsible government organizations to pursue the cases of violence against journalists especially the cases of murdered journalists very seriously and do not let the journalists to be faced with violence or to be targeted anymore.

We believe that joining efforts of journalists, media activists, journalism and civil society organizations will pressurize the government in order to prevent any kind of violence against journalists.
