Reporters are beaten up, Minister of Information and Culture is quiet

During reporting on suicide attack, last Wednesday in Sadarat roundabout, Kabul city, at least four reporters, including one Afghan, one foreigner and one female reporter were beaten up and physically insulted by security forces.

Even though journalist, freedom of speech and media organizations has condemned this action and asked security officials to punish the offenders and try to avoid such treatment in the future, but the Minister of Information and Culture is still seems quiet about this incident.

According to the constitution and media law of the country, the government is responsible to protect media activities and the rights of journalists. Especially the Ministery of Information and Culture which has the main responsibility of protecting media and reporters in Afghanistan. But in many cases, this organization did not undertake its responsibilities which the indifferent, regarding the violent treatment of security forces against reporters on last Wednesday in Kabul is one of its instances.

Afghanistan National Journalists’ Union (ANJU) while once again wants the Ministery of Information and Culture to take care of its responsibilities, asks the high ranking officials of the country, especially the President and the MPs to escalate pressures on Ministery of Information and Culture and Minister himself in order to avoid their indifference regarding the media.

ANJU once again condemns the wrong treatments of security forces with reporters and asks security officials of the country to prevent unlawful treatments against reporters.
