Statement No 53

Tuesday December 24, 2013

Under the name of Protecting National interest, The Media should not be dealt with taste

Attorney General while giving a statement to Media yesterday, warned them if they broadcast or publish articles against National Interest they will be faced with serious legal actions.

In this statement Media has been advised to do not misuse freedom of expression, against the national interest.

In a part of the Attorney General statement is written: “As it have been seen that a number of video, audio and printing Media misuse the freedom of expression and exceeds the framework of Ethical conducts, in other hands they prefer personal interests against national interests and violate the Mass Media Law as well as the constitution of the country. After this the perpetrators of these acts will be faced with legal actions”.

Afghanistan's National Journalists Union while accepting the law enforcement as an important issue and respects the rule of law in the country, concerns about the possibility of encounters with Media and Journalists under the name of Law enforcement.

Afghanistan's National Journalists Union believes that the lack of a clear policy for Media in the country, which is obviously the duty of Ministry of Information and Culture to draw it, caused some ambiguities in regards to the extent of freedom of expression in the country.

While we believe that the present problems in some Medias are caused by the failure of Ministry of Information and culture in preparing a policy for Media activities, we requests  judicial institutions that while enforcing the Law, they should avoid any kind of violation against Media.
