Welcoming the decision of the president for amnesty of journalists and media

Sunday January 12, 2014

According to Presidential office,President Karzai has ordered the Judiciary in a meeting with high ranking Judiciary officials that they should close all last year cases of the journalists and media outlets.

Mr. Emal Faizy President Spokesperson said: “in a judiciary meeting on last Thursday in which Chief Justice, Attorney General and other officials had participated the decision of closing journalists and media’s cases was made.”

While welcoming the decision  President, Afghanistan's National Journalists’ Union (ANJU) asks the judiciary body to enforce this decision immediately.

President had promised the media representatives in a meeting almost one month before that he’ll close these cases.

Most of the cases which have no legal proofs are opened by unlawfully established “Media Violations and Complaints Invitation Commission” that is being directed by Information and Culture Minister.

ANJU was the only organization that had followed these cases and asked President by means of official letters, publishing declarations and conducting news conferences to issue a warrant and order the judiciary in order to settle the cases.

ANJU’s official letters were sent to the addresses of President Office, Office of the Presidential Administration, National Security Council, High Court, Attorney General Office and Ministry of Information and Culture.

Now the President has fulfilled the promise and issued a decree in order to close the cases. Once again we ask judiciary body to enforce the warrant immediately.
