A university lecturer who declared ‘Jihad’ against media was arrested

Saturday December 17, 2016

Abdul Marof Tafakuri, a lecturer in the Law and Political Science Faculty of Takhar University was arrested yesterday by National Directorate of Security of Takhar province.

A number of journalists, media workers, and representatives of media supporting institutions had previously complained that Tafakuri in his assertions had called them “Devil groups, evil, and Jewish”.

Based on the other accounts he has been reported to have declared ‘Jihad’ on the media and he has hoped the ISIS one day would punish them.

In response to Tafakuri’s assertions a meeting was held two days ago by journalists, media workers, and civil society members demanding legal prosecution of Tajakuri’s case by judicial institutions.

A resolution which was adopted at the end of the meeting states: “This resolution has been adopted by the participants of the meeting in condemnation of Tafakuri’s assertions. We call upon the office of the President, Attorney General, Ministries of Higher Education, and Information and Culture to join their efforts in addressing this case.”

“Meanwhile we ask the National Directorate of Security, Ministry of Interior Affairs and the provincial government of Takhar to prosecute Tafakuri’s case.”

In response to these requests, Tafakuri was arrested yesterday by ‘National Directorate of Security’.

The officials from the ANJU have stated that they demand serious prosecution of the case via legal channels. In a statement issued by the Union, they expressed their deep concerns over some efforts by a number of circles in Takhar aiming to exert pressure on Takhar province’s officials to release Tafakuri, and demanded from the office of President and that of the Chief Executive not to allow these pressures to prevent the prosecution of the case.
