Celebration of International Press Freedom Day and awarding a number of Afghan Journalists

Afghanistan Journalists Federation held a meeting with the help of UNICCO to celebrate international day of press freedom this morning. This meeting was held at the office of “Nai” which is the supporter of Afghanistan’s independent media Number of media directors, Journalists, government officials and advocacy institutions attended this meeting.

Mr. Abdul Hamid Mubariz president of ANJU said during the meeting that freedom of expression is not gifted to Afghanistan but it is definitely the results of struggles which have been continuing in years. He also appreciated the sacrifices of journalists and writers to ensure the freedom of expression and encouraged other young reporters for more efforts to ensure the continuation of freedom of expression and access to information.

In a report which has been released by media watch about the problems and challenges facing reporters in past year it was emphasized that violence against journalists are increased. Mr. Sediqullah Tawhidi head of media watch expressed his concerns over the increase of violence and criticized that responsible government agencies did not struggled enough for the safety of journalists. At the end of the meeting appreciation awards and letters, which were provided by the office of Nai, were granted to a number of journalists.
