We welcome the relief of media tax penalties by the President

Wednesday August 30, 2017

Statement No: 187

Yesterday, President Ghani issued an order relieving tax penalties of audio media, news agencies, and broadcasting companies.

The order also states that media tax rebates are to be disbursed in instalments.

Afghanistan’s National Journalists Union (ANJU) welcomes this proceeding of the President and deems it as an unprecedented effort towards freedom of speech and free media.

Moreover as a member of the federation of journalists and media of Afghanistan, ANJU appreciates the efforts made by the federation in following up media problems, communication with the government in this respect and putting through a number of media demands.

ANJU insistently asks the President to take serious measures in solving other media problems regarding tax rebates or tax penalties, media failure to pay their license fee, and the amendment of the regulations on establishment and activities of media; as it was promised in yesterday’s meeting.

We are ready to cooperate with the government in solving the problems of media and journalists as before.

ANJU shall constantly follow up the implementation of the promises made by the President regarding the problems of media and journalists.

The Executive council of ANJU
