Monday October 30, 2017

On October 25, a meeting to assess the functions of the joint committee of media and government was held by Afghanistan’s National Journalists Union (ANJU) in Ghor province.

In this meeting which was held in the office of Independent Human Rights Commission, Ghulam Baser Khaaze the provincial government, Mubarak Rezayee the head of Independent Human Rights Commission, the head of Information and Culture Department, representatives of NDS and ANA, representatives of journalists unions, and a number of journalists were among the participants.

Ghulam Naser Khaaze, the governor of Ghor province and the chairman of joint committee on the safety of journalists modified the security situation of journalists in Ghor province as good and asserted that the local government has always tried to support journalists and will continue to do so.

However according to the governor of Ghor, journalists in Ghor province face many challenges including lack of a public meeting venue, sufficient salary, transportation and equipment. Mr. Khaaze asks all national and international organizations to pay serious attention to the situation of journalists in Ghor province.

Meanwhile a number of other participants of the meeting deemed the activities of the joint committee as unsatisfying and criticized it. According to them the meetings of the joint committee are not held regularly based on its guideline. At the same time, it is believed that lack of cooperation by government agencies as well as the ignorance of journalists of their rights has caused problems in media activities and instability in the functions of this committee.

The participants of the meeting decided that the meetings of the joint committee has to be held on time and serious efforts have to be made to enforce the decisions of the committee.

This program was held by ANJU in Ghor province to assess the functions of the joint committee of media and government in that province.
