Saturday night, around 8:30 PM unidentified armed men attacked Radio Sarhad station, a local radio in Ghor province.
An explosion and fire was observed from the scene which has burned the equipment and the studio of the radio, inflicting considerable financial damage.
This local radio station had commenced its activities in Ghor province four years ago, and had become one of the prominent radio stations in the province.
Before the incident, the radio employees had expressed concerns over suspicious presence of armed men near the radio station and they had requested the government for security assurance. Thus the ministry of interior affairs had ordered the related security officials to provide necessary security measures for the radio.
Afghanistan’s National Journalists Union (ANJU) along expressing concerns over lack of safety for media and journalists deems this attack as a crime which has been carried out by those who never believe in freedom of speech and try to silence the voice of the people. ANJU meanwhile asks the security agencies to identify and prosecute the perpetrators of this attack.
